Fishing vessel Michelle K, 110' Clam Boat, Manasquan Inlet, New Jersey.

Crew escapes injury when boat hits jetty

Published in the Asbury Park Press 9/26/04

POINT PLEASANT BEACH -- Four commercial fishermen made an emergency stop in the Manasquan Inlet last night after their boat struck a jetty and took on water.

No one was injured when the Michelle K hit the north jetty off Manasquan, said borough police Patrolman Joe Michigan.

Realizing that the water coming on board would prevent them from making it to the boat's regular dock, the crew steered for the inlet wall on the Point Pleasant Beach side and moored there, near the northern end of Ocean Avenue at Inlet Drive.

The men were probably able to climb off the boat without assistance, Michigan said.

The vessel may have sustained heavy damage. Pumps brought in by firefighters were useless in stopping water from coming onboard. By 10 p.m., the boat had stopped sinking, but its deck was covered with water. It was unclear why the boat hit the jetty.

Michigan did not have details about the crew, who were likely heading back from a fishing trip when they got into trouble. Borough police, the Coast Guard and the Marine Division of the State Police were alerted to a boat in distress around 8 p.m.

The Coast Guard is leading the investigation into the accident. The fishermen were being interviewed last night at the Coast Guard station, here.

Divers from the Point Pleasant Beach First Aid and Emergency Squad were assessing the boat's damage and working with a towing company to prepare for moving it. It was not clear how long the boat would stay moored next to the wall.

The accident attracted many on-lookers on both sides of the inlet, which serves as a border between Monmouth and Ocean counties. The clearest view was on the Manasquan side. Police tape kept civilians away from the boat.

09-02-04Today we saw something special, too bad no camera!
Got stuck in traffic while the bridge contractors picked up a beam using two cranes from a truck parked on the bridge. They swung it over and set it in place. Only the beam, end for end was the wrong way. So, stop traffic again, put the beam back on the truck, who had to return to the loading zone, have the truck go through town and make a u-turn, stop traffic again and pick the beam again.

Makes you wonder.

2003

11/25/03Porthole II was hauled out today, so we are done with our lackluster season.
The exceptional high tide today allowed the marina to haul our boat, power wash and block and then haul another 42 Post before we lost the water. This was a first.

07/23/02Oh boy, I finally started to update the site. Being on vacation for 3 1/2 weeks didn't give me any time to work on the web page J
Most of the dives are up and I started adding pictures. There will be more to follow.
07/13/02We installed a pair of S&S  Katapault Series four bladed propellers today. The test ride proved good. The boat is notably smoother (in fact very smooth) and a little bit faster. Cruising at 2000 rpm saw an increase of about 2 knots, lightly loaded.
While on the way back, the Porthole II assumed a Budget Boat Towing identity and responded to an overturned vessel. We stayed on scene until the appropriate tow boat arrived.
06/12/02Updated the Edison Fire page to include a picture and link of our newest engine, Engine 4.
Added a picture of the "Porthole II" print on the party page.
Fixed the recent dive links, thanks John
05/28/02Added pictures of our most recent fire
Added pictures form the life raft annual service (hopefully this is the only way you will ever see the raft inflated)
Added pictures of hull repairs
Added machinery space pictures to the boat page

Engines were running last night, rudders and related parts are finished. After waiting over 3 weeks for drip less rudder seals we find out they are not adaptable to our boat.................
Hull repairs 3/4's done.
05/20/02Bottom is almost finished being painted. Only the transom has had polish and wax so far, really far behind this year.

05/05/02The Lectrasan has been completed eliminated now.
Of course, now I find out there is a bill before Congress and the Senate to allow this type of system in "No Discharge" zones!
Head discharge 01.jpg (37990 bytes)
05/03/02New surprise, the generator Hour meter wire was touching a ground, so the meters have been running for the past 2 months. Now I have hour meters with an extra 600 hours on them. How do you fix that? You can't. You buy new ones and hook them up to a battery and let them run to you get the right hours, in this case approximately 2300 hours.
05/02/02A/C discharge lines re-routed and new through hulls added.

1 bad 8D (168 pounds) battery replaced, from an almost impossible mounting location.

Found the water leak that was flooding the master stateroom cabinets, now I have to do the starboard side window upgrade.

04/25/02Added some pictures to the electronics page.
1 new picture of Misty
04/24/02Well, so far many of the parts are still wrong, or have not been cast yet. Prop Shafts, rudders, rudder ports are all being cast or machined. In the meantime though we have totally rebuilt the steering shelf and rudder supports. All of the wood that had been in the lazerette (compartment in the rear under the deck) has been removed. The wiring and bilge pumps have also been updated.
The pictures (thumbnails)
Steering shelf c.jpg (24666 bytes) New steering shelf which is now solid fiberglass, the normal aft bilge pump (under the steering gear) and emergency pump can be seen here.
Steering shelf a.jpg (25453 bytes)
  1. Shelf and new fiberglass deck supports.
The normal bilge pump is a Rule 2000 GPH pump. This is the pump that will come on while we are underway up on plane (amber indicator light that comes on occasionally at the helm). Water leaks into the bilge through the shafts, rudder ports, deck hatches etc. This is how the water is removed.
The emergency pump is a Rule 8000 GPH dual pump (2 - 4000 GPH pumps plumbed in series). This pump has its own safety feature, the twin pumps. Should one pump burn out there is still a 4000 GPH pump to work. If you have ever seen the big 2.5" discharge under the swim platform, this is what is connected to it. This pump has never come on except for testing, which is a good thing! If this pumps activates while at sea, we are in trouble!
Note, that there are 3 additional bilge pumps in the bow, one Rule automatic 500 GPH pump, one Rule 2000 GPH and one Lovett 1500 GPH. These pumps only come on while the boat is at rest, or not under plane. Water will still leak in through the shafts, rudders, etc. The 500 GPH pump is plumbed to keep the absolute minimum of water in the bilge, keeping it almost dry. The 2000 GPH is the "normal" forward bilge pump. This would come on if the 500 can't keep up. This only happens when we come down off of plane. Any water that the aft pump doesn't remove runs forward and floods (I know, bad choice of words) the forward bilge compartment. On a Post (Porthole II) water travels throughout the boat through the stringers, so it does build up at times.
The 1500 GPH is a backup, emergency pump.
Steering shelf b.jpg (30960 bytes)Starboard side view of shelf, supports and emergency pump. Also seen in this picture is a transducer for the cockpit mounted video depth sounder.
Steering shelf d.jpg (17031 bytes)    The is the new rudder shelf, without the rudder or rudder port!
04/18/02We removed the "Lectrasan" system and re-plumbed the "head" system to comply with local "no-discharge" laws. Although the discharge of a properly working* "Lectrasan" is much lower then any municipality, new "no-discharge" laws mean just that. So there will be new "toilet" procedures this year (minimal).
The new "no-discharge" laws have been around for several years, the Porthole II has always been in compliance, When the Shark River, Manasquan River and Barnegat Bay law was passed we installed a 20 gallon holding tank to meet requirements.

*Over the years I have seen very few Lectrasans' that were properly maintained or even serviceable. It is one of those nasty "out of site, out of mind" situations.

04/17/02Very slow going, about half the parts we have ordered so far have come in wrong!
Were off to a late start working on the boat, so far mostly just ordering parts.
03/11/02Christopher was sworn in as a Princeton Township Police Officer today
02/05/02Added some changes to the Edison Fire page
02/05/02Today we did something a little different.

With Budget Towing, we went over to the Aquarium on the Beach and helped move 4 sharks and 1 manta ray from the big shark tank upstairs to the basement holding tanks. "Shark wrestling" can be wet and fun, not to mention a little wild when 250 pounds plus of sand tiger gets upset and starts thrashing around!
01/31/02We have a new addition to our family!
For now Misty is sharing the page with our Lacey girl.
As she grows though she will get her own page.
01/08/02Minor changes through out the site.
Too Cold!
