Cops: Man tried Parkway Suicide
WALL: State troopers rescued a man Monday whom they said was trying to commit suicide by getting himself hit by traffic on the Garden State Parkway.
Taylor R. Smith, 21, of Toms River, stopped his car on the right shoulder of the southbound lanes of the parkway near milepost 94 shortly before 1 pm, said State Police Sgt. Al Della Fave.
"He then throws himself into the right lane of traffic, causing a black Volkswagen to hit him," Della Fave said. "He gets up, runs south and tried to run in front of a tractor-trailer."
Trooper David Korecky arrived on the scene and was able to restrain Smith before he could get himself struck by the truck, Della Fave said.
Smith was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, where he was treated for minor injuries.
Police recovered a suicide note from inside Smith's car, Della Fave said. Smith was charged with driving under the influence, Della Fave said. Smith, of Vermont Avenue, is also currently under Indictment for weapons possession, as well possession of heroin stemming from a March arrest in Dover Township, authorities said.
