2002 Dive Season Trip Reports 2004 2003 2002 2001 2000 | | May | | May June July August September October November | | 05/27/02 | Went to the Beth Dee Bob today on the Seeker. Very foggy start but near flat calm conditions. Bottom conditions were the same as previous weeks. Lots of fish and lobsters now on the wreck. Plenty of oil (probably diesel fuel) coming up from the wreck too. | | 05/11/02 | Not so calm seas on the Seeker, we re-directed to the Mohawk. 1st dive only had 10-15' of vis. By the 2nd dive vis was about 20' with the bottom still at 48º. | | 05/04/02 | Calm seas prevailed for a dive with Seeker today. 10-15' vis on the Mohawk and about 48 on the bottom. | | May June July August September October November |
| July | | May June July August September October November | | 07/30/02 | We made it out today , despite the bridge problems. Looking south in this picture, one half of the concrete beam and the crane's 600 ton boom can be seen in the water. See additional pictures on the 35 bridge page.
Today we had a great day on the water. Two stops, the Emerald and the Delaware. Conditions on the bottom were 53º and 20 feet or so and 56º and about 15 -20 feet. Congrats to Jon M for grabbing his first lobster!
We also had the pleasure of getting up close to a Danish Tall ship, the 200' "Danmark". The Danmark was heading north to NYC's South Street Seaport. (Danmark's website)
| | 07/29/02 | Today I did a very shallow dive, on a 47' Hines-Farley Sport fisher,
which sunk at the dock in Point Pleasant. This was a Budget Towing salvage. | | 07/26/02 | Canceled, weather. | | 07/18/02 | Seeker, today we dove the Bass. The Bass is a 341' US sub in 160 fsw. Sunk in 1945. The wreck is pretty much intact, except for the bow which is broken off and about 30' from the main wreck. We only got to do one dive here but it was excellent, low 50's with 30 - 40 foot of vis.
| | 07/17/02 | Seeker, today's was a dive on the Andrea Doria. Mild conditions greeted us as we departed Montauk at 10:30 last night and just got better as the day wore on, with almost flat seas by the end of the first day. This front moving in is the reason we delayed our departure by 24 hours (from the 15th to the 16th).
I made my "first" dive on the Doria around 10am with fellow crewmember Frankie. Varying currents along the way down diminished to almost none at the wreck. This being my first dive here I limited myself to a 20 minute bottom time with a max depth of 190'. We were tied in near the stern and I ventured fore and aft about 100 feet in each direction and dropping down only a bit into the corridors. No artifacts for me but Frankie did recover a nice cup and bowl.
We were tied in approximately in the center of the yellow circle
The wreck, looking nothing like this is probably closer to the graphic on the Seekers web site (5th picture down) (http://www.deepexplorers.com/articles/esquire_doria.html) But, according to Dan, the wreck is in much worse condition then even this graphic depicts, with "Gimble's Hole" now gone. The wreck is slowly collapsing under it's own weight, having gone from a minimal depth of 160' to a current 175'. | | 07/13/02 07/12/02 | A couple of fun dives (not), we finally got the new props and I put them on. What a joy when the current is running! | | 07/02/02 | Dive Buddy Bruce and I took Bruce's 20' Yamaha Jet boat down to Beach Haven today (by trailer). We used this shallow draft boat to get out on the shoals surrounding Beach Haven's inlet (Little Egg Inlet). Amidst all the breaking seas we dove on a 46' sailboat that had sunk due to foul weather last month. The owner of the vessel is still listed as missing. The boat is listing on its starboard side with the mast above the water about 4 feet. This dive was for inspection purposes for possible salvage.

| August | | May June July August September October November | | 08/24/02 | Seeker dive, canceled - weather | | 08/11/02 | Seeker dive today. To the Tolten. Beautiful day again. Diving conditions were about average, 20-30 foot of vis and high 50's. I searched around for the remaining bow anchor and found it, under the hull plates. The bow has collapsed now and is no longer recognizable as such. Perhaps the weight of the anchor pulled it over. But, the anchor is definitely still there for some adventurous diver. | | 08/07/02 | Canceled - weather | | 08/06/02 | Canceled - weather | | 08/04/02 | Seeker dive today. Went to the Algol, on a perfectly flat ocean. All the divers had a great dive reporting mid 50's bottom temp and 20' or so of vis. The ocean surface temp went from 74º on our arrival to 79.8º by the time we left the site. Still winds and bright sun sure did there job today! A bunch of lobsters and several blackfish headed home in coolers too. | | 08/03/02 | Check back later in the week for this weeks salvage | | | May June July August September October November |
| September | | May June July August September October November | | | | | 09/28-29 | Anyone that went out this weekend is crazy or nuts, maybe both! | | 09/24/02 | This is what happens when the sea kicks up and your still anchored, especially with outboard powered boats (due to the lack of a substantial transom). This was another Budget job. This 20 mile tow started at Monster Ledge. We also dove on the wreck to recover some of the tackle and to rig air bags to assist with the tow.The owner was happy to at least recover two Penn International 80's with custom bent butt rods. More pictures here
| | 09/21/02 | Seeker dive to the Resor, again great conditions and a great day on the water. Dive conditions by the 2nd dive were 30+ vis and mid 50's on the bottom. | | 09/20/02 | Today we did our second survey dive on a sunken sailboat off of a south Jersey beach. This was a Budget Towing and Salvage job. The dives' purpose was for gathering information as to the wreck layout and condition for next months removal.
While removing some of the rigging and halyards to make the dive safer we retrieved this block.

Only 2 bottles and 1 lobster came off the Immac though. The Ranger didn't provide us with much either, 1 bug, although the divers did see a huge fluke! | | 09/03/02 | Another sunken boat, aka Don't run your 31' go fast Donzi out in the ocean when the surf is 12 foot! Asbury Park Press story | | 09/02/02 | Canceled, weather | | May June July August September October November |
| October | | May June July August September October November | | | So far ONLY one dive this month, and I didn't get to dive! | | 10/30/02 | Seeker, Canceled | | 10/27/02 | Seeker, Canceled | | 10/26/02 | Seeker, Canceled | | 10/23/02 | The odds against us with the weather forecast, we headed south to the Gulf Trade. Got there just in time to see a sport-fisherman anchoring and chumming for blues. Se we turned around and headed to the Tolten. Divers reported great conditions, warm water with 30-40 feet of vis. It got sloppy on the way home, 6 foot seas for the first 10 miles and then a mellower 4-6! | | 10/19/02 | Seeker, Canceled | | 10/16/02 | Inlet 10-16-02 Nor' Easter

| November | | May June July August September October November | | | | 11/07/02 | The boat was hauled out and blocked for the winter. Thanks to everyone that came down to help and watch. There will be no further "dive reports" for this year, thanks all for looking. | This is why I now wait for full or new moon high tides, no water problems here! In fact, although the ramp looks level, it has actually pulled away from the bulkhead. If it was still attached it would be at about a 10 degree angle going "up" to the boat! | | May June July August September October November | | 2004 2003 2002 2001 2000 | º.
